From the Editor

Twenty minutes into practice, I woke up. I don’t always make it to an early morning class, but when I do, I admit that I’m a bit foggy. But then at some point, I wake up. And I remember why I set my alarm in the first place. Usually it’s partially because I texted someone the night before to meet me at the studio in a moment of capitalizing on positive peer pressure to maintain my commitment to practice. And to waking up.

We need all of our tools for practice–as well as all of our communities of practice. All of the ways in which we come together help us to wake up. This past weekend, the Moksha Festival brought people together for workshops, meditation, films, kirtan, yoga asana, Ayurveda, and more. Tonight, the clothing company Yogasmoga (made in the USA) opens their second SoCal location in Beverly Hills and you’re invited to the opening. Then over the weekend of of July 24-26, the Wanderlust Hollywood studio opens with a weekend of festivities (scroll down to enter to win a pass to the party!). And in between the big events, we have numerous opportunities to connect with our friends and practice partners, set dates for the mat, begin practicing even if we’re still asleep, and ideally we move through the virtual fog and wake up.

Here’s to communities of practice.

FREE SHOW TONIGHT  with The Luminaries

Formed in Venice Beach California, and immersed in one of the most culturally diverse communities in LA, the Luminaries are service oriented Hip Hop emissaries of peace. From the underground parties in “Dogtown” to the biggest festival stages on the west coast, the Luminaries have now taken their message international and crowds everywhere sing along the anthem, “Peace Worldwide Starts From Inside!”

Luminaries bring an amazing live show that’s reminiscent of the golden era of Hip Hop, fused with a soulful, electro, live band, funk filled experience! As expressed by one of the “Grandfathers” of the genre, and early founder of modern rap, Afrika Bambaataa reminded us the power of “Peace, Unity, Love, and having Fun!” In the same vein, Luminaries create a soundscape of Hip Hop mantras inviting audiences to participate in the connectivity of one another while going ecstatic on the dance floor!

Cure Stress in Three Minutes

Ultimately, our breath is the barometer, telling us how we’re doing mentally, emotionally, and physically. Taking a few moments to mindfully experience your breath has powerful, stress-relieving benefits. When we interact with our breath, we can affect our state of mind, our physiology, and our body’s stress response.

Ask yourself if this moment is a good time to give The Three-Minute Cure a try?

Sit or lie down in a comfortable position. Close your eyes. Take a deep breath to settle. Begin to follow your breath, either at the nostrils or the belly/chest. This is your foundation. As the body becomes peaceful your mind opens to suggestion. Count 12-15 long breaths with the intention of relaxing your body.

Accessible Yoga Conference in Santa Barbara

Conference founder Jivana Heyman, one of the co-owners of the Santa Barbara Yoga Center, offers this advice for people who want to increase the accessibility of their yoga classes. It is advice we would all do well to remember, “ Offer Inspiration instead of competition. Generally, when teaching we offer a form of a pose to the whole class, and then if an individual student is struggling we offer them a “modification.” Consider a different approach: teach the whole class a modified form of a pose, then offer individual students other variations. Or, offer a few different variations of a pose and have the students choose which they want to practice. Remember, students want to please you and can be competitive, so they will often try to do the most challenging form you offer. Be conscious of your language in suggesting that one variation is more “advanced” than another. What is “advanced” Yoga anyway? My teacher, Swami Satchidananda, used to say that “Yoga is not just standing on your head, as many people think, but learning how to stand on your own two feet.” Read more here: http://layoga.com/practice/yoga-therapy/opening-the-door-to-yoga-students-with-disabilities/. Practicing with the Revolution Doc Team

Beautifully shot and edited, Revolution is a remarkable documentary by Director Rob Stewart about the necessary personal and global transformation that must occur if we are to secure our future as a species on this planet.

Revolution details Stewart’s journey into ocean conservationism over a period of four years and through fifteen countries. Stewart chronicles five mass extinctions that have occurred in the last 3.7 billion years. He employs the lens of self-interest and self-preservation as an educational tool, warning us that unless we act soon and rapidly, a sixth mass extinction is imminent. Aimed at audiences of all ages and primed as an educator’s tool, Revolution’s simple, powerful and poignant message is, “What must we do in order to keep the human race alive and vibrant for the next generation?”

It’s Fig Season!

While fresh figs are just fantastic on their own, consider:

• Slathering them with almond butter for a simple breakfast.

• Finely chopping and then rolling them into a gluten-free tortilla, slicing it crosswise, and baking until figs begin to melt and tortilla becomes brown and crunchy.

• Simply scattering them around a cheese plate with almonds and walnuts.

• Slicing them in half and drizzling with balsamic and grated Manchego cheese (a Spanish sheep’s milk cheese) in this Spanish take on what Red Jen Ford thinks of as a baked cheese plate. To read her recipe, click here.

Vedic Astrology: Love and Connection

Venus turns retrograde in Leo today. Expect some relationship changes and perhaps even relationship upheavals between now and September 6, when Venus ceases being retrograde. These relationship changes have the potential to alert us to higher possibilities and greater devotion. Venus is where we find happiness in life; unfortunately, we tend to seek happiness in others. Look deep within for a higher love and source of beauty.
