From the Editor

It is now officially Autumn. When we consider the rhythms or cycles of the year, this is a time of introspection, drawing our attention inward, and of connecting deeply to our practice.

This weekend is full of an abundance of opportunities to connect with community, learn something new, and support your practice in innovative ways.

Throughout, whether searching options for green living, opening your mind to new possibilities, supporting charitable organizations, or engaging in ritual, taking the time to stand on your own two feet–and take good care of your feet–can help propel your practice forward.

Scroll down for more information on an Ayurvedic practice of foot massage to keep your grounded for the fall.

In this week’s newsletter, we have two giveaways you can enter to win: tickets to the Green Festival this weekend and tickets to see Emel Mathlouthi at the Skirball on Oct 1. Scroll down to enter.

On Saturday morning, I’ll be leading the yoga after the power walk held by Dress for Success in Griffith Park. Hope to see you there!

Here’s to putting our best feet forward,

How to Practice a Group Mala

Shiva Rea offers the following advice for a group or global mala experience to usher in ritual in the fall:

Offering a collective yoga mala practice is a powerful experience of heart entrainment as people move together for 18 to 108 rounds of collective movement around the breath pulse we all share. Empower yourself in your own practice first, on ritual holidays, before leading a group.
Create a sacred space for your practice
If possible, bring everyone into a mandala circle to practice around a community altar. The circle empowers the community and is symbolic of a mala, but not all spaces lend themselves to a circle—if yours does not, don’t let this deter you.

Start your Day on a Good Foot

Foot Massage for Better Health

The following procedure for foot massage using a tennis (or even better, a therapeutic) ball addresses the entire skeletal structure of the body as reflected in the feet.
1 Place the ball underneath the heel of your right foot. Observe the following sequence…
2 Press down on it and roll it over the entire surface of your heel – the earth element aspect of both feet. Then step on the ball, and standing as straight as you can, breathe down into your belly. One hip will naturally be higher than the other. (Don’t worry. We’ll make you even later on.) After about 30 seconds release the ball.

Vedic Astrology with Sam Geppi

September 27 (in USA)

Today marks a Lunar Eclipse and the Full Moon in Pisces, which carries the archetype of a mystical and creative mind and heart. Eclipses polarize and throw things out of balance, so expect confusing extremes as you vacillate between feeling immersed in the problems and drudgery of this world and the desire to escape it all. How you escape is of primary importance. We can escape from reality into drugs and other substances or escape INTO reality through meditation and spiritual practices. Read more of Sam Geppi’s forecast here. http://layoga.com/life-and-style/astrology/vedic-astrology-september-2015/

See Kahlil Gibran’s The Prophet on the Big Screen

One of literature’s most beloved works (it has sold more than 100 million copies in 40 languages), Kahlil Gibran’s The Prophet, has now been made into an animated feature film. Written and directed by The Lion King’s Roger Allers, the all-star cast includes Salma Hayek-Pinault, Liam Neeson, Alfred Molina, John Rhys-Davies, Quvenzhane Wallis, and Frank Langella.
