From the Editor

“Hope is the simple belief that things can change.” This line from a preview I watched for the OWN Network’s original show Belief, airing for the first time on Sunday, October 18.

We practice to reinforce the simple belief that things can change. Whether we’re changing our body’s ability to respond to stress, or enhancing our ability to feel a sense of ease, decluttering our lives, or repeating a pose to create an internal expression of joy, we begin with belief every time we step onto the mat.

Some of the ways in which we reinforce belief—and hope for that matter—are through ritual and through community.

Right now we’re in the midst of the ritual cycle of Navaratri, the nine nights of the Goddess. One of the places to celebrate this (every day) in LA is at the Sivananda Center in Marina del Rey. See the full schedule here: http://sivanandala.org/course/5091.

This weekend, if you happen to be in the Bay Area, visit the Moksha Festival for a full day of inspiration.

And register now for the Veda Mela taking place at the REEF in downtown LA November 7-8. Two full days of workshops, DJs, classes, music, ritual, community, and more will allow you to do more than hope, but to put change into action through practice and ritual. Use the code LAYOGA to receive a 20% discount off of tickets.

Whatever you do, believe,

Six common herbs and spices for at-home healing are: turmeric, ginger, garlic, basil, cinnamon, and coriander. Demi Lovato’s Commitment to Self-Care

Artist Demi Lovato is a world-traveling superstar whose new album Confident will be released on October 16. She certainly displays confidence onstage as well as in other aspects of her life. She’s focused on balance and her recently launched skin care line, Devonne By Demi, is becoming as big of a hit as her music. How she takes care of herself, through practices dedicated to mind, body and spirit is an inspiration for us all.

LA YOGA: What do you do to maintain balance?

Demi Lovato: Maintaining my health is the most important thing for balance: I have a passion for exercising and maintaining a great health regimen. I’m on a meal plan, not a diet but a meal plan, because I’m in recovery from an eating disorder. Then of course, taking care of myself whether it’s getting my nails done, or getting a facial or a massage. In addition to everything else, water and sleep are both important to me. Taking care of myself helps with my internal stress and helps me feel pumped up to conquer my dreams.

Traveling to the far reaches of world, and to places cameras have rarely been, Belief searches the origins of diverse faiths and the heart of what really matters. From the epic to the intimate, webbed throughout each hour are stories of people on spiritual journeys, taking them to sacred spaces, including: the largest peaceful gathering in the history of the world as a group of believers seek redemption along the banks of a holy river; a free climber on the side of a mountain who believes there is no greater power than just being present as he climbs without rope; inside the ceremonies of the past as a 21st century woman seeks to find a miracle cure using ancient ceremonial treatments; the quiet of the night as a culture seeks to hang on to its 50,000 year-old history by searching the stars for insight to share with future generations; and, a courtroom and prison where a grieving mother must grapple with forgiveness as she comes face-to-face with her son’s killer. These stories and others will all lead us to ask: “What do you believe?”  All episodes air at 8 p.m. ET/PT o OWN. Watch a preview here:http://www.oprah.com/belief/Oprah-Winfrey-Presents-Belief

Vedic Astrology with Sam Geppi

October 16-17

The Moon is in Scorpio where it is debilitated and emotions are intense. Be careful not to become overwhelmed by your imagined fears and projections. Instead, allow that intensity to be a great catalyst drawing you deeper into the truth of the heart and of selfless love.
This Moon is also joined with Saturn, the planet of stress and worry. Take it easy on yourself and others. You might be painfully aware of everyone’s mistakes, including your own so resist the urge to punish yourself or others.

Jill Miller Teaches at Veda Mela Nov 7-8

“We know our way around our cities better than we know our way around our own bodies,” says Jill Miller, author of The Roll Model and creator of the corrective exercise format Yoga Tune Up®. How did she develop  Yoga Tune Up®?  Miller directed her critical thinking to the repetitive movements of yoga and other fitness regimens, considering their impact on the body’s skeletal structure and fascial tissue. She became less interested in the execution of the asana and more interested in human movement, from which Yoga Tune Up’s conscious fitness format (built around pain, posture, and performance) was born. This logic ushered in the whole “body sense” component of Miller’s signature programming. Read the rest of Susan Currie’s article about  Yoga Tune Up® here: http://layoga.com/editorial/jill-miller-maps-the-body-with-yoga-tune-up/
