From the Editor

How we appreciate ourselves, how we nurture ourselves, the face we make when we look in the mirror, and the way we occupy our bodies as we walk down the street — all of this defines the relationship we have with ourselves and the image we have of our own bodies.

A healthy relationship with ourselves and a positive self-image are attitudes we can actually cultivate. This is part of the yoga practice, if we maintain the intention and consciously build the skill set to do so.

The sets of resources and tools to integrate a healthy sense of body awareness are growing within the yoga community. This weekend at the Yoga Journal Live! San Diego event, a Saturday panel discussion on leadership issues that are related to body image promises to be a powerful and life-changing examination, as does the launch of the Occupy Beauty initiative, which will offer positive tools to occupy your own body with ease, grace, and joy.

Joy is a menu item we never have to worry about overindulging in, as its growth encourages our ability to balance and rebalance. Some of the ways in which we can order up more joy and occupy our body with a smile as we glance in the mirror is through gratitude. Right now, think of something that you feel grateful for and just notice how things shift in the image you have of yourself. Later, do it again. Personally, I could list numerous things that fill my gratitude carafe, and my practice is definitely on the top of that list.

Think about your own list and then whatever you see in the mirror, smile.

With Joy,
Felicia

Fennel SaladRed, White, and Blue Fennel Salad

By: Red Jen Ford

Fennel is one of the quintessential scents, flavors, and foods characteristic of California’s Mediterranean climate. While it is a frequent ingredient favored by Italian, Mediterranean, and modern California cuisine, it is often overlooked by Americans.

According  to Michael Murray’s The Encyclopedia of Healing Foods, fennel is an excellent source of Vitamin C, potassium, phosphorus, folic acid, and is also high in magnesium, manganese, iron, calcium, and molybdenum, Fennel is also high in cancer-fighting coumarin compounds such as anethole.

Vedic Astrology: Feel Guru’s Grace

Sam GeppiToday is the best day of the year to feel Guru’s grace in your life with the Full Moon in Sagittarius. This particular Full Moon is also called Guru Purnima, the Full Moon of the Guru.

It is no coincidence that these two things line up, with Guru Purnima also being the Full Moon in Sagittarius, as this is the most powerful sign for Jupiter (called Guru in Sanskrit). Today is a day when you can feel, deeply in your heart, the truth of your teachings and beliefs.
