From the Editor

In the practice of yoga, we are often given the reminder to “go within” to release ourselves from all of life’s distractions and connect to ourselves. And the distractions are many. Yet what if all of life’s distractions are also part of the path, if we connect to them with presence and attention. What if everything contributes to our enlightenment?

This week in LA, there is a book launch reception for photographer Michael O’Neill. His magnificently shot On Yoga showcases the practice from the streets of New York to the very waters of the Ganges. Part of his story of dedication to the practice comes out of how yoga – asana and meditation – were integral to his ability to regain use of his arm after it was paralyzed post-surgery. I wonder if sometimes the obstacles are even part of the path. See the photographs and join him for the reception on November 8 (see the info below).

Throughout this weekend, the Veda Mela takes over the REEF in downtown LA with an amazing line-up of teachers, musicians, workshops, shopping, spa treatments, and even a dog adoption event. Allow your trip within to take place in a supportive community at Veda Mela November 7 and 8.

And then find the time to sit back and immerse yourself in the vision of Laurie Anderson’s exploration of the Heart of a Dog. As someone who fell in love with a small fluffy white rescue dog who has become my constant companion, I can relate to Laurie Anderson’s desire to both pay tribute and to explore the larger issues of life and death through a life.

Everything is part of the path,

Felicia

Enter to Win Tickets: Select Screenings of Heart of a Dog

Performance artist and filmmaker Laurie Anderson shares a powerful sonic and visual collage in her new feature film, Heart of a Dog. This work serves as an homage — almost a biopic — for Lolabelle, Anderson’s beloved rat terrier whom she trained (with a trainer) to paint, create sculptures, and even play piano after going blind. The death of Lola is woven with reflections on the death of Anderson’s mother, as well as the afterlife. Quoting the Tibetan Book of the Dead, she contemplates, “The purpose of death is the release of love.” Read the rest of Karen Henry’s review in LA YOGA here:http://layoga.com/entertainment/film-inspiration/heart-of-a-dog-film-review/

Gallery Opening for Michael O’Neill’s On Yoga

Simply turning the pages of photographer and yogi Michael O’Neill’s gorgeous new coffee table book On Yoga is a spiritual experience. Divided into sections represented by the elements: water, earth, fire, air, and spirit, the sumptuous photos showcased in the oversized tome are captivating. Some of these we’ve seen before, in a Vanity Fair feature story that highlighted a selection of notable teachers. This expanded version shares those few and many, many more, offering us a glimpse into the famous and the anonymous and the depth of their practice. One of my favorite parts of the book was the photographer’s own story of how his own yoga practice helped regenerate nerves in an arm paralyzed after a surgery. Yoga became indispensable, he said. We know that feeling. This book pays homage for all of us.

Meet Michael and attend the book’s opening reception Saturday, November 7, from 7-9pm at the Taschen Gallery, 8070 Beverly Boulevard, Los Angeles. RSVP to: LA-Gallery@Taschen.com or call 323-852-9098.

Heart of a Dog Film Opens in LA

As America’s best-known experimental performance artist, Laurie Anderson has made her mark in many forms of media: multimedia stage performances, seven books, multiple studio albums and soundtracks, visual art museum installations. And, yes, filmmaking. Laurie’s meditative nonfiction film,Heart of a Dog, is an impressionistic musing on love, life, and death reinforced by evocative music. The film especially speaks to everyone who has loved their dog. Read more of Karen Henry’s review here.http://layoga.com/entertainment/film-inspiration/heart-of-a-dog-film-review/

Laurie Anderson will be in attendance to host the Q and A sessions after the 7pm screenings Friday and Saturday evenings at the Nuart Theatre in West LA:http://www.landmarktheatres.com/los-angeles/nuart-theatre/film-info/heart-of-a-dog

Dragonfruit hits Superfood Status

Julie Morris shares with us why she likes including dragonfruit in recipes, “Dragonfruit (also known as pitaya) is a relative newcomer on the superfood scene, but is quickly gaining a major following. Believe it or not, dragon fruit is the fruit of a cactus. There are two types that are most often sold for edible use: one with a white interior and one with a fuchsia interior. Choose the white and you’ll be disappointed with a weak, watery flavor, but it does have a unique white and black-spotted inner aesthetic. But choose the pinkish-purple variety and prepare to enjoy a whirlwind of tastes, ranging from sweet and tangy to floral and nutty.

Dragonfruit is a balanced snack, high in fiber and full of abundant micronutrients including Vitamin C in its sweet flesh and some protein and healthy Omega 3 fats in its crunchy edible black seeds. In addition, the pink variety is especially high in antioxidants, including heart-healthy lycopene. Use frozen dragonfruit packs in smoothies, or munch on dried dragon fruit slices (sold at natural food stores) and toss them into salads, desserts, sushi wraps, and morning breakfast bowls.” Read more about dragonfruit and Julie’s recipes here:http://layoga.com/food-home/recipes/5-potent-superfoods-to-power-up-your-kitchen/

The provocative film India’s Daughter Opens in LA

This is the story of an exceptional and inspiring young woman – 23 year old medical student, Jyoti Singh (publicly known as “India’s daughter”); of her short life, and brutal gang rape and murder in Delhi in December 2012.  One of the most extraordinary and unprecedented aspects of the film is a confession in custody by one of the perpetrators interviewed by the film maker in Tihar jail. This gives crucial insight into the mindset of the men who committed the rape, and presents a wider in-depth exploration of the patriarchal society and culture which seeds and encourages violence against women.
