Life is full of cycles, seasons, and the rituals of rhythms. Our lives are characterized by periods of activity as well as periods of rest. And among all of the cycles, we must take time to both celebrate and to renew. Today begins the Santa Fe Yoga Festival, where a packed house of yogis is gathering to celebrate love and practice. (And tonight, they will watch a special preview screening of the documentaryAwake, a film about the life of Paramahansa Yogananda, author of Autobiography of a Yogi.)

Next weekend, there’s another cause for celebration, asBhakti Fest fills the desert with the sounds and sights of the practice of devotion. When we dedicate ourselves to love, in any form, through presence and practice, it makes a difference. It matters in our own life, our own ability to rest,
restore, and rejuvenate, to allow ourselves to be fully present for the next round of our activities. It also matters on a global level. There is a ripple effect that has a positive influence among the planet’s trials and tribulations. More than ever, we may succumb to a feeling of helplessness or hopelessness as we watch the news, or view tragedy appear in all the forms of media we encounter. While love may not make it disappear instantaneously, it can give us the strength and fortitude to carry on, to do our work in the world, and to support and influence others. It matters. Love also gives us the opportunity to connect amidst life’s chaos.

This is the intention of Labor Day, a day of rest and renewal so we can enter refreshed into the fall season with strength. Pray for strength and courage. Act on it.

In gratitude,
Felicia
