Melon – The More Bitter, The Better
We enjoy the nutritious benefits of most members of the gourd family – watermelon, cantaloupe, and cucumber – yet few of us are familiar with the most bitter, and thereby the most beneficial, gourd of all: bitter melon.
Bitter melon resembles a cucumber with bumpy skin. According to The Encyclopedia of Healing Foods, a cup of bitter melon contains 23 calories; it is also an excellent source of vitamins B, C, and E, folic acid, zinc, fiber, magnesium, and contains twice the potassium of a banana. Studies have shown that it lowers blood sugar, combats in vitro viral activity (HIV infections and herpes), and helps fight cancer, especially leukemia.
Sautéing and scrambling it with eggs or stir-frying it with pork and bean sprouts works well or even marinating it in rice vinegar and sesame oil and serving cold. If you shy away from bitter foods, balance the taste with the gourd’s sweeter cousins, cucumber and watermelon, and follow the seasonal eating guideline of “things that grow together go well together.”

Animals in Need: Meet Annie
Annie is a classic female with an active personality. She has a classic GSD personality and will thrive in a home that understands her. She likes to learn new things and will excel in training. Pleasing her people is one of her main goals in life. Cats and small dogs are not on Annie’s list of favorite things. But walking, car rides and being with her people are right at the top of the list! An active home with older children, or teenagers will be best for her. All dogs are neutered/spayed, microchipped and up to date on shots.
Visit here if interested in Annie.
German Shepherd Rescue of OC is a volunteer-driven non-profit organization dedicated to rescuing, rehabilitating and rehoming purebred German Shepherd dogs that are facing hardship.
Dogs come to the rescue when their owners are no longer able—or no longer want–to care for them, and we know we are their last resort. Often, the dogs arrive in horrific condition, with injuries from collisions with cars or from downright abuse and the rescue invests heavily to return them to good health. The rescue survives entirely on donations.
Between September 29 and October 30, 2014, German Shepard Rescue of OC is embarking on a major fundraising campaign to help us raise funds for veterinary care. To offer a tax-deductible donation in any amount, please click here.
