Manchego Baked Figs
Fig season in California starts mid-May and runs through October. They are naturally rich in potassium, calcium, magnesium, iron, copper and manganese; four to five figs contain just about 150 calories. Because of their high potassium content, they are considered helpful for regulating blood pressure. Additionally, they are among the most highly alkaline foods so they help support the body’s pH balance.
While fresh figs are just fantastic on their own, consider slathering them with almond butter for a simple breakfast, simply scattering them around a cheese plate with almonds and walnuts, or slicing them in half and drizzling with balsamic and grated Manchego cheese (a Spanish sheep’s milk cheese) in this Spanish take on a baked cheese plate:
Manchego Baked Figs
1 pint fresh figs – green Adriatic, black Mission figs, or a combination
1 or 2 tbsp balsamic vinegar
Fresh black pepper
4 oz. Manchego cheese

German Shepherd Rescue of OC is a volunteer-driven non-profit organization dedicated to rescuing, rehabilitating and rehoming purebred German Shepherd dogs that are facing hardship.
Dogs come to the rescue when their owners are no longer able—or no longer want–to care for them, and we know we are their last resort. Often, the dogs arrive in horrific condition, with injuries from collisions with cars or from downright abuse and the rescue invests heavily to return them to good health. The rescue survives entirely on donations.
Between September 29 and October 30, 2014, German Shepard Rescue of OC is embarking on a major fundraising campaign to help us raise funds for veterinary care. To offer a tax-deductible donation in any amount, please click here.

Vedic Astrology: Dealing with Mercury Retrograde
![Astrology with Sam Geppi]()
Miscommunications and disorganization are possible as Mercury turns retrograde on October 4. Mercury retrograde cycles illuminates those areas of life where we are overwhelmed by details and not making the correct adjustments.
The key to Mercury energy is “neutrality.” Our ability to hear others’ words with openness (rather than need or bias) and respond to all situations in kind, will be revealed. This is a great time for writing and editing, or you may be spending the same energy cleaning up messes.
