Green juice: it’s become one of my go-to refreshers for cultivating balance during the season of increasing heat, both internal and external. I love the variety of green hues, the different combinations that offer a burst of flavor and something to soothe the internal fire. Someone asked me today why I like green juice so much since the whole vegetable offers so much fiber, for example, that it’s not the same as actually eating vegetables whole.

They’re right, it’s not the same, but juice has a value all its own. It’s easy to digest, encourages detoxification, and gives a burst of readily absorbable vitamins, minerals, phytonutrients, and antioxidants. Some of my favorite ingredients include kale (of course), anything that is a source of chlorophyll, cucumber, celery, and mint (for a hint of sweetness and a boost for digestion). A few sips or an entire glass is something I find both uplifting and rejuvenating.

Now that we’ve officially entered the summer season, anything we can do to prevent heat from building up in our bodies is welcome, and green juices may just be what the doctor ordered. If you’re not sure where to start, scroll down to find easy recipes for beginning juicers provided by Juice It Up.

One of my favorite times to enjoy a refreshing juice is after I practice. There are specific cooling practices that help balance excess heat prevalent in this pitta season. Pair one of Shiva Rea’s specific practices for summer with a glass of your new favorite combination of fruits and vegetables, and you will experience summer in a whole new way: cool and balanced.

A toast to your health,
Felicia

Best Practices for Summer From Shiva Rea

Summer RitamThis is the best time of the year for Sringara Rasa, practices to nourish the water element to balance excess heat as well as to tend the fires of love and appreciation.

This is the best season for flexibility and ease of range of motion, which can be enjoyed in fluid backbends, namaskars to increase flow and agility, and Sringara Rasa circular movements for increasing the love flow.

Here are some best practices for the summer season:

  • Enjoy stimulating cooling practices at this time: sitali (hissing breath), slow and deep ujjayi pranayama, and nadi shodhana.

  • Asanas that remove excess heat from the body, such as forward bends and mild backbends, are most suitable.

  • Enjoy solar mantras at sunrise such as the Gayatri mantra or the simple Om Suraye Namaha to align with solar energy.

Juice it upDid you know that June is National Fruit and Veggie Month? If you have ever thought about incorporation juicing into your diet, now is a great time to start and turn your health around to celebrate summer.

Juice it Up! has been in the juicing business for nearly a decade. They answer some frequently asked questions about juicing to help get you started.

LA Yoga: Juicing and juice blends are great ways to get a lot of nutrition on the go, but how can frequent juicers avoid getting too much sugar, even natural sugar, in their diet from juicing?

Juice It Up: Avoid saturating your juice blend with too much fruits and starchy veggies, such as carrots and beets. Also, use a low carbohydrate base such as cucumber.

CD Review: A Thousand Suns

A Thousand SunsGuruGanesha Band

Spirit Voyage

Yogi Bhajan said that inside each human being is a light that is brighter than a thousand suns. His lectures inspired many songs and his messages set the vibration for this powerful, intuitive series of mantras.

GuruGanesha’s previous albums have primarily featured words from the Sikh tradition. It is a beautiful change to hear him lend his talents to the famous Hindu mantra “Sri Ram” in this most recent album, A Thousand Suns. Paloma Devi’s vocals on this track are particularly sensual, strong, and sacred.

Vedic Astrology: Embrace the Time of Childlike Curiosity

Sam GeppiA new cycle of communication, curiosity, and flexibility begins with the New Moon in Gemini. In this case, Gemini is the sign where our childlike curiosity compels us to learn, gather information, and then adapt based on increased intelligence.

This New Moon happens in the Nakshatra of Ardra, ruled by Lord Shiva, the destructive/transformative aspect of God. Now is the time to shatter old paradigms and be willing to adjust your life accordingly. Make sure the causes you defend are worthy.
